Izmir Economics celebrates its 18th birthday
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) celebrated the 18th anniversary of its establishment with a ceremony held on Balçova Campus. Mahmut Özgener, President of IUE Board of Trustees, pointed that young people were their biggest reassurance in a rapidly changing world. President Özgener said, “Our school stays away from a classical education model and raises students who are interested in new world, new technologies, new media. We need new masterminds, approaches, thrills in today’s world where digital technologies change the fate of economics and trade especially. Young people are our biggest reassurance in a rapidly changing world. The more education, confidence, and opportunities we provide them, the quicker we can adapt to the new world.”
Doyens of economıcs came together at Izmır Unıversıty of Economıcs
The “Post-Election Turkish Economy” has been discussed in collaboration with Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and İktisat ve Toplum Dergisi (Journal of Economics and Society). Prof. Dr. Asaf Savaş Akat, Faculty Member of Bilgi University, Prof. Dr. Serdar Sayan, Faculty Member of TOBB Economics and Technology University, Ömer Faruk Çolak, Editor of Journal of Economics and Society, and Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, Faculty Member of Izmir University of Economics, attended the event as speakers, which took place on IUE Balçova Campus.
Little athletes
Children with special needs and their peers become “little athletes” at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). 10 children with autism and 10 typically developing children come together and develop basic motor skills, and overcome differences as part of the collaboration between IUE Vocational School of Health Services and Special Olympics Turkey.

IUE visits Hope Workshop
Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, Rector of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, and Lecturer Burçin Önder, Director of IUE Vocational School, visited SağKal Umut Atölyeleri (Sağkal Association Hope Workshop). SağKal, (Quality in Healthcare) is an association, which aims to increase awareness about each topic and field affecting human health, ensure healthcare organizations and institutions provide quality services and goods, popularize perception of quality in purchase of services and goods, and offer education and training needed by organizations and institutions aiming for quality in managing processes and procedures.
Izmir University of Economics receives 2019 Science Award
Assoc. Prof. Karpat, Faculty Member from Department of Physics, Faculty of Arts and Science, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been deemed worthy of the Science Academy’s Young Scientist Awards Program (BAGEP) Award. Assoc. Prof. Göktuğ Karpat has been one of the 43 academics to receive this award nationwide.
UAV Seminar held at IUE
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Club co-organized organized a seminar. UAV Systems Coordinator Samet Sayın delivered “Historical Development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Their Application Areas, and Respective Legislation” themed seminar on campus on Friday, March 22.
Lifestyle as risk factor for cancer
Almost half of cancers are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Prof. Dr. Kamer Mutafoğlu, Head of Division of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), pointed that majority of cancer types were preventable. Mutafoğlu said, “Nearly one-third of deaths caused by cancer are associated with five main lifestyle factors such as tobacco products, alcohol consumption, malnutrition, obesity, and lack of physical activity. Use of tobacco and tobacco products alone is the most significant cancer risk factor.”
Internatıonal Day of Mathematıcs and Pi Day observed at IUE
The International Day of Mathematics and Pi Day has been celebrated with an event held for the second time this year by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Mathematics. Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Arts and Science, delivered the opening speech of the event organized by Prof. Dr. G. Yazgı Tütüncü, Head of IUE Department of Mathematics, Lecturer Sevin Gümgüm, and research assistants from the department. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Bayramoğlu, pointed out the importance of mathematical theories and applications in a country’s development and progress; and mentioned the achievements of IUE Department of Mathematics.
