Debate tournament by IUE students
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Debate Community, brought university and high school students across the country together at the “IUE Open Debate Tournament” that was held for the second time. Teams, as they were discussing their assigned subjects according to the rules, got into an intellectual struggle for 2 days and made new friends at the same time.
Received training to train entrepreneurial students
Ministry of National Education Directorate General for Secondary Education and Junior Achievement Education Foundation Turkey, which was founded in 1999 as a part of Junior Achievement (JA) that started its activities in 1919, signed a protocol for ‘Developing Youth Entrepreneurial Skills’. The first step has been taken for Design & Skills Workshops as part of the protocol, and ‘Teachers’ Training’ has been held in Ankara for teachers coming from seven cities across the nation.
Continuous scholarship to support students reach their goals
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) will provide uninterrupted scholar support for its students. Thanks to the decision taken by IUE Board of Trustees, students will not live in fear of losing their scholarship anymore. They will enjoy continuous scholarship for 4 years in associate, 7 years in undergraduate programs, and 9 years in Faculty of Medicine. Scholarships, which are also good for 2 years in Foreign Language Preparatory Program, will support the academic studies of students. With uninterrupted scholar support, students will be able to engage in doing double major, minor programs, internship, going on Erasmus, without the fear of losing their scholarship.
Quit smoking on World Smoking Boycott Day
Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, Director, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), called attention to the health effects of smoking in observance of February 9, ‘World Smoking Boycott Day’. Prof. Dr. Şemin, who pointed out that cigarette smoking was the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, said, “The biggest harm of cigarette smoking is that it can be too late to reverse the harms.”
Exterior additions on buildings pose great risks
Exterior additions on buildings such as rooftops, television antennas, satellite dishes, gutters, AC units, solar energy systems, and water tanks cause great danger during strong winds and storms. Tearing, breaking, and removal of the roof covering and other freestanding stuff on roofs are threats to human life. Prof. Dr. Celal Kozanoğlu, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), pointed out the importance of inspecting these exterior additions.
Chinese New Year celebrated at Izmir University of Economics
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. This year Chinese New Year falls on February 5. Chinese people living in Izmir got together to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2019 at an event co-held by IUE Chinese Culture Center and Izmir Association of Friendship and Solidarity with Chinese People at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). The Chinese and Turkish cultural mosaics warmed the hearts.
Shelter for stray animals
Students of Animal Lovers Club, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), built insulated homes and feeding stations for stray animals on campus. The project, co-developed by IUE student clubs and supported by the IUE Vocational School Social Responsibility Committee, provided a warm shelter and food and water station for outdoor animals living on campus.
See Like a Child receives first prize in USA
The “See like a Child (Çocuk Gibi Bak)” project, carried out by the students of Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics, came in first place at the international Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Facebook Global Digital Challenge. The final presentation of the challenge, in which projects on stopping the negative discourse and discrimination competed, took place in United States capital, Washington D.C.
VCD PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT IF WEDDING
Instructor N. Toros Mutlu of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Visual Communication Design department conducted a workshop in one of Europe's leading expositions, 13th IF Wedding Fashion, which took place between 22 and 25 January in Izmir. Aims of this photography workshop included the participants to become able to manage their photos using Adobe Lightroom software, to obtain more powerful insights about the professional services they take, and to express their expectations more clearly to the photographers and agencies they work with.
ENGINEERING FACULTY MEMBERS AWARDED WITH TUBITAK GRANTS
Asst. Prof. Seçkin Eroğlu from Genetics and Bioengineering Department received TUBITAK 1001 grant with project named "Investigating the role of YSL gene family in iron metabolism of the seed". One of the most common nutrient deficiencies in Turkey and in the world is iron deficiency. It is more common in women and children. Due to symptoms such as fatigue and learning difficulties, iron deficiency results in loss of labor. Governments distribute iron containing tablets or syrups, or enforce the addition of iron into basic foods such as bread in order to comprehensively fight against iron deficiency.
