180-YEAR JOURNEY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
On the 180th anniversary of the invention of photography, over 95 million pictures are shared alone on Instagram on a daily basis. Toros Mutlu, Lecturer, Department of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated, “Photos, which are very crucial in communication, allow people to display the personality they design for themselves.”
ARCHITECTURAL TOUCH TO ART IN DARAĞAÇ
Izmir University of Economics, Department of Architecture 2nd year students designed a residence for an artist couple in Umurbey Quarter, known as “Darağaç”, located behind the Izmir Harbour within the scope of the final project for the fall semester of 2018-2019. In this region, where industrial structures such as the Historical Electricity Factory, Halkapınar Sümerbank Campuses are concentrated, different artists have been living in solidarity with the local residents, producing art and exhibiting them for the last 5 years. In the project that carried out under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Burkay Pasin, Asst. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Lec. Hugh Clarke, Lec. Lale Başarır, Lec. Filiz Keyder Özkan, Lec. Onur Dinemz, Lec. Ayşe Bozkurt Karal and Lec. Özgür Genca, students have brought creative proposals both to urban housing life and to a transformation of the region through art.
TOY WORKSHOP BROUGHT HIGH SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TOGETHER
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School (VS) hosted a “BI’TASARIM VS: From Past to Future” titled conference on 18-19 December 2018 in order to bring together the esteemed representatives of design and building industry and Vocational School students. High school students and university students came together at a toy workshop as part of the event.
HIGH SCHOOLERS BECOME ‘COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONALS’
63 students from 10 high schools came together with communication professionals at the 8th “Communication Workshop” organized by Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Students, who attended advertising, media, and creative documentary workshops, got an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice with their projects.
REPORT CARD SHOULD NOT PUT A PRESSURE ON CHILD
Clinical Psychologists Merve Minkari Tunçay and Nilay Uğurlu Öztürk, coordinators of Psychological Development and Counselling Center (PDCC), Izmir University of Economics (IUE) held a “Reaching Success through Intrinsic Motivation” titled seminar for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Tunçay and Öztürk made recommendations about avoiding course and exam load, and drew attention to report card anxiety.
HIGHER YIELD IN AGRICULTURE IS POSSIBLE VIA LED LIGHTING
Mert Kalaycı, student at M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Program of Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), managed to move soilless agriculture technology a step forward and made it 30 times more efficient via led lighting. With this method, which aims to avert global food and water shortages due to global warming, uninterrupted photosynthesis is possible.
TUBITAK’S GOAL: QUALIFIED PEOPLE FOR QUALITY SCIENCE
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Project Development and Technology Transfer Office held an informative seminar at IUE Conference Hall for academicians applying for TUBITAK grants for their scientific studies. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Feza Korkusuz, Advisor to the President of TUBITAK, stated that the country needed qualified people for quality science, and that the society’s interest in science increased.
