Exterior additions on buildings such as rooftops, television antennas, satellite dishes, gutters, AC units, solar energy systems, and water tanks cause great danger during strong winds and storms. Tearing, breaking, and removal of the roof covering and other freestanding stuff on roofs are threats to human life. Prof. Dr. Celal Kozanoğlu, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), pointed out the importance of inspecting these exterior additions.

Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. This year Chinese New Year falls on February 5. Chinese people living in Izmir got together to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2019 at an event co-held by IUE Chinese Culture Center and Izmir Association of Friendship and Solidarity with Chinese People at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). The Chinese and Turkish cultural mosaics warmed the hearts.

Students of Animal Lovers Club, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), built insulated homes and feeding stations for stray animals on campus. The project, co-developed by IUE student clubs and supported by the IUE Vocational School Social Responsibility Committee, provided a warm shelter and food and water station for outdoor animals living on campus.

The “See like a Child (Çocuk Gibi Bak)” project, carried out by the students of Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics, came in first place at the international Peer-to-Peer (P2P): Facebook Global Digital Challenge. The final presentation of the challenge, in which projects on stopping the negative discourse and discrimination competed, took place in United States capital, Washington D.C.

Instructor N. Toros Mutlu of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Visual Communication Design department conducted a workshop in one of Europe's leading expositions, 13th IF Wedding Fashion, which took place between 22 and 25 January in Izmir. Aims of this photography workshop included the participants to become able to manage their photos using Adobe Lightroom software, to obtain more powerful insights about the professional services they take, and to express their expectations more clearly to the photographers and agencies they work with.

Asst. Prof. Seçkin Eroğlu from Genetics and Bioengineering Department received TUBITAK 1001 grant with project named "Investigating the role of YSL gene family in iron metabolism of the seed". One of the most common nutrient deficiencies in Turkey and in the world is iron deficiency. It is more common in women and children. Due to symptoms such as fatigue and learning difficulties, iron deficiency results in loss of labor. Governments distribute iron containing tablets or syrups, or enforce the addition of iron into basic foods such as bread in order to comprehensively fight against iron deficiency.

Some of the online games that are popular again lately can be potentially harmful to children and youth. The experts call attention to inculcating positive habits such as sports and hobbies in children, and the importance of the relationship between parents and children.

On the 180^th anniversary of the invention of photography, over 95 million pictures are shared alone on Instagram on a daily basis. Toros Mutlu, Lecturer, Department of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE),  stated, “Photos, which are very crucial in communication, allow people to display the personality they design for themselves.”

Izmir University of Economics, Department of Architecture 2^nd year students designed a residence for an artist couple in Umurbey Quarter, known as “Darağaç”, located behind the Izmir Harbour within the scope of the final project for the fall semester of 2018-2019. In this region, where industrial structures such as the Historical Electricity Factory, Halkapınar Sümerbank Campuses are concentrated, different artists have been living in solidarity with the local residents, producing art and exhibiting them for the last 5 years. In the project that carried out under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Burkay Pasin, Asst. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Lec. Hugh Clarke, Lec. Lale Başarır, Lec. Filiz Keyder Özkan, Lec. Onur Dinemz, Lec. Ayşe Bozkurt Karal and Lec. Özgür Genca, students have brought creative proposals both to urban housing life and to a transformation of the region through art.

IUE graduate, fashion designer Duygu Karasu went global at the 13^th If Wedding Fashion Izmir Fair. Karasu, who attracted great attention with her designs, is signing collaboration agreements with participants from different parts of the world.
