Natural Stones are being reshaped by design. Tuğçe Savran, Graduate of Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), created a new use for natural stones, which are commonly used in floor and wall tiles, by transforming them into three-dimensional shapes.  

Microalgae, which are microscopic algae, typically found in freshwater and marine systems, living in both the water column and sediment and are capable of performing photosynthesis, will be used in face moisturizers and in shrinking the cancerous cells. Scientists’ researches on microalgae will enable them to produce nanoparticles and conduct further research for their areas of use. 

Hagia Sophia, the Ancient City of Ephesus, Alhambra Opera Building in Izmir, fishing boats of Urla, all of which are considered cultural elements of Turkey, were displayed in Ireland. Angela Burns, Lecturer at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), expressed her feelings on the country, its culture, history and sight-seeing with illustrations from a foreigner’s perspective living in Turkey. Burns displayed her artwork at ‘Féile an Phobail’, Ireland's Biggest Community Arts Festival. Mayor Deirdre Hargey of Belfast also attended the festival where Burns displayed 12 artworks consisting of illustrations from Turkey and Ireland.  

Designers of Izmir University of Economics are designing the costumes and stage designs of theater plays in Germany. Jörn Fröhlich, Lecturer, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, and Cansu İncesu, graduate from the same department, reflect the marks of Turkish designers in German theaters with their costume and stage designs.

Nanoscale research are underway to tackle bacterial biofilms, which cause repeating ear and tooth infections, foodborne infections, and medical device-related infections. Asst. Prof. F. Pınar Gördesli Duatepe from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), will conduct a nanoscale research within TUBITAK’s 3501 career project in order to prevent bacteria build up and forming of biofilms. Asst. Prof. F. Pınar Gördesli Duatepe will study the levels of adsorption and their surface properties. So that, new ways of tackling the biofilms, which impose a great burden on health system worldwide due to their persistency and high-levels of antibiotic resistance, would be found.

Do not let Kurban Bayramı (Feast of Sacrifice) turn into a painful experience for you. Last year, 3 thousand 102 clumsy butchers, who wanted to perform the sacrifice in places other than mobile slaughterhouses, had to rush into emergency rooms. Some citizens received wounds by being attacked by the animal or injuring themselves with knife cuts. As these clumsy butchers were treated for cuts and bruises in their hands, wrists, arms, forearms, legs, head, neck areas, the experts stated that these people not only hurt themselves but hurt animals unnecessarily as well, and recommended that experienced butchers at designated slaughterhouses should perform the slaughtering.

The 40 year-memory of a good cup of Turkish coffee turned into fashion art, and was accepted among the artworks of 78 artists coming from all around the world at the international exhibition International Fiber Arts Biennial.

The Feast of the Sacrifice this year is a good long holiday for millions in Turkey, however, the experts strongly warn against hackers those who will be away from their home for the long holiday period. The experts point that mobile phones, tablets, laptops use a wireless network and hackers (a “hacker” is more frequently used to describe someone who discovers and takes advantage of a weakness in a computer system or network) track the wireless internet communication and gain access to people’s bank accounts and credit card information.

As part of an agreement with Les Toques Blanches Lyonnaises, established by world-renowned chefs of France, students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Culinary Arts and Management do their internship in France. Students gain international experience while learning the specifics of their professions from the award-winning chefs at Michelin-starred restaurants in Lyon, France. Over the last six years, 86 student chefs have interned with award-winning chefs, and this year 14 more students will gain new experiences in France.
