POLITICIANS USE SOCIAL MEDIA UNILATERALLY
It has been emphasized that the social media, the most popular communication tool in our day, is being used unilaterally by political parties before the 2014 Local Elections and thus causing an ineffective connection with public. Burak Doğu, Lecturer at IUE Department of Media and Communication, stated that it would be wrong to see social media as a whole. He said that they conducted a study titled, "Review of Social Media Environments in terms of Political Communication Applications" as a TUBITAK research project regarding the 2011 General Elections, and said that the political representatives reflected their party policies in the name of making political discourse.
STUDENTS ENVISIONED BAYRAKLI AS A CITY OF HEALTH
Students of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, and Department of Architecture, redesigned the health spaces in Bayraklı. Total of 50 students, explored the establishments in the county for days and conjured up facilities that could be efficiently used by the patients, and turned those into projects. Students of interior architecture and architecture came together for projects that are also supported by Dutch Health Architects group.
THE ROAD TO SUCCESS WITH IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS ALUMNI
Volkan Ersoy, manager of the world famous chain restaurant Denny’s, stressed that people should be doing a job they enjoy, and any job not appealing to emotions would not result in success. Ersoy, who was invited to Izmir as a guest speaker by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Alumni Association, shared his work experiences with the alumni. He said that he started his restaurant career as a janitor and climbed his way up to being a manager, and suggested that they should go after their dreams.
SOCIAL WITNESSING COMES ALIVE IN CINEMA
It has been emphasized that humour goes to the deep roots of Turkish society and criticisms arise from humour and develop, and lead the society. Director Ezel Akal, Grup Yorum Band Singer İnan Altın, and Actor-Director Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan met with the students at “1st Izmir Hak ve Emek (The Right and Labour)” themed Cinema Days organized by Izmir University of Economics Media and Cinema Clubs.
UNIVERSITY ENTREPRENEURS GOT CERTIFIED
The university students graduated from the Entrepreneurship Training Program they received within KOSGEB (Small & Medium Enterprises Development Organization) in order to be able to establish their own businesses. 60 students have received their certificates at the Certificate Ceremony for KOSGEB 2013 – 2014 Academic Year Applied Entrepreneurship Training Program for Universities hosted by Izmir University of Economics.
BOOKS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO ANATOLIA!
Young students all around Anatolia will finally be able to have their library thanks to the ‘Yürüyen Kitaplar (Walking Books)’ Project by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) İlgi'siz Student Community. IUE students purchased one thousand books for each school and delivered as part of the project that is funded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and co-supported by the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Students of Izmir Economics, who witnessed the joy of young students in rural schools of Denizli, Gaziantep, Düzce, Amasya, and Samsun until now, are getting ready to establish libraries in Sakarya and Bilecik next week. The club will also be visiting the schools in Bingöl, Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, and Şırnak in the near future.
WOMEN ARE SOCIALLY INVISIBLE
It has been emphasized that women in Turkey were labourers with no social security on this International Women's Day (March 8), which is known as a day of struggle originally. While many activities are taking place in terms of celebrating the International Women's Day, the experts noted that 29% of female population got involved in work life as opposed to a 70% non-working group, and that no increase in women representation in politics was to be expected.
DON’T LET EXCESSIVE ANXIETY BECOME A ‘YGS’ NIGHTMARE
The experts emphasize that too much anxiety causes failure as the time shortens for “Transition to Higher Education Examination” (YGS), which the university candidates are awaiting anxiously for. Students needed to stay motivated for YGS that will take place on March 23, stated the experts. Clinical Psychologist Nilgün Köstem, IUE Psychological Development and Counselling Centre Coordinator, made some recommendations to students about how to deal with negative thoughts that may cause failure.
MANAGER TRAINING FROM IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
IUE School of Foreign Languages conducted a certified training for managers working in English language training in higher education and shared the latest developments. The certificate program, where foreign language education managers from 9 universities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey attended, aimed to fulfil a need in the field of English language education management.
FEMALE TEACHERS ARE ENTRUSTED WITH ELEMENTRAY EDUCATION
Studies revealed that while 59 thousand 313 teachers out of total of 62 thousand 933 teachers in 27 thousand 197 elementary schools in Turkey were females, only 3 thousand 620 of them were male teachers. The “Education and Gender (EDGE)” titled European Union Project, where 12 European countries participated in, studied the gender based structure of education in Turkey. The study conducted by Izmir University of Economics also revealed that only 9 thousand 853 out of 82 thousand 978 education administrators assigned in the city and its provinces were females which corresponds to %11.9.
