INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR EXERCISE HARNESS FOR ASTRONAUTS
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who is training the future Aerospace Engineers, qualified for a gold award for developing exercise harness for astronauts at the international design competition. Mehmet Ergül, graduate, IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Industrial Design, designed an exercise harness as a graduation project and became “Gold Winner” at 2017 A' Design Award and Competition held in Italy where 10 thousand projects from 80 countries worldwide applied. Ergül will be receiving his award on June 6 in Milan. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, also viewed the design.
LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Seeds of entrepreneurship culture are being spread in the early ages in Izmir. High school students are getting ready for an “Innovation Journey” in accordance with the joint program co-developed by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Embryonix Technology Transfer Office and Özel İzmir Amerikan Koleji (ACI-American Collegiate Institute). Students, who received training on innovation and entrepreneurship, developed projects that were evaluated within the program called, “Innoaction Challenge”. A protocol was signed between Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, Vice Rector of Izmir University of Economics, and Didem Erpulat, Principal of ACI, as a first step in order to utilize the students’ projects.
ARTICHOKE RECIPES BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Young chefs of Izmir Economics are bringing new flavors to artichoke. The future chefs baked, cooked, and prepared different artichoke recipes such as cupcakes, kokoreç (charcoal grilled seasoned mutton intestines), jams, sushi, and lemonade, and presented to the guests at the International Artichoke Festival.Internationally recognized chefs of IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management also shared different recipes of artichoke with the participants at the workshops set up at Urla Cumhuriyet Square. IUE Trainer Chef Semen Öner created different flavors of artichoke with children at one of the workshops.
“ARTICHOKE” RECIPES BY IUE CHEFS
Artichoke, turned into an international flavor one more time in the hands of young chefs of Izmir Economics. Young chefs added new flavors to traditional artichoke recipes at the 3rd Urla International Artichoke Festival. 25 famous chefs from 10 different cities re-interpreted artichoke at this year’s festival. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, visited the future chefs at their booth. President Demirtaş purchased products from students and tasted their innovative version of artichoke dishes. Demirtaş also thanked the world famous chefs for their contribution to the festival and presented them plaques.
IDEAS WILL BE TURNED INTO A PRODUCT IN ENERGY
Business ideas of young entrepreneurs will be turned into a product. ENERJISA will help successful projects on a wide variety of areas such as renewable energy, energy storage technologies, smart building technologies, energy efficiency, etc. to be carried into effect as part of the “Development Program: From Idea to Product” co-organized with Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Embryonix Technology Transfer Office. Embryonix TTO will receive applications by April 30, successful projects will be included in incubation program in May, and later on, projects selected for "Fusion Day" will get a chance to be implemented by ENERJISA.
IZMIR’S NEWEST INTERNATIONAL MISSION
Prof. Dr. Barış Özerdem, Head of Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been assigned as the vice president of Region At Large (RAL) (including countries from Asia, Middle East, Europe, and Africa) of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). ASHRAE is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment which has 58 thousand members across 128 countries.
CHILDREN'S FUN WITH STREET GAMES
Children, the future of Turkey, became acquainted with science at Izmir University of Economics, learned and played street games such as hopscotch, dodge ball, jump rope, sack race, etc. 300 kindergartners of Izmir Private Turkish College (ITK) met with students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), and celebrated April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day by singing songs on campus. The kindergartners had fun with educational toys, books, costumes, masks, and instruments designed by students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Services as part of their materials design course at the “2nd IUE Children’s Festival”.
IUE’S NEWEST: FACULTY OF MEDICINE
Izmir University of Economics’ 3 year endeavors to open Faculty of Medicine (English instruction) came to a happy ending with the approval of the respective boards of Council of Higher Education. The first medical students of Izmir Economics will start classes in 2017 – 2018 academic year. The instruction at Faculty of Medicine, where 50 students will be admitted initially, will be English. The young health professionals will also contribute to Izmir’s well-deserved share in health tourism.
WHERE DIABETES MEETS ART
Insulin pumps, injection materials, prospectuses, medical products all turned into artwork combined with Sümerbank fabrics. Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilek Himam Er, Lecturer at IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, who prepared the exhibition titled, “3 Dosage in a Day”, inspired by medical products regularly used by diabetes patients to control their blood sugar, reconciled the disease with art. The exhibition will stay open until May 2 at Izmir Sanat.
