HISTORICAL BUILDINGS NURTURE THE CITY
Restoration of historical buildings causes cultural gravity effect and nurtures city economy. Based on the data by Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as part of retrieval of cultural heritage, 22 historical buildings in Izmir in 2016 were subsidized. Payment of 460 thousand TL for 9 buildings in Ödemiş, Konak, Foça, Bergama, Bayraklı, and in Tire was projected, and 247 thousand 201 TL was provided as a project support for 60% of 13 buildings.
DAYLIGHT INCREASES EFFICIENCY
Daylight bulbs make work life easier. Melis Örnekoğlu, graduate of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), studied the effects of color, intensity, and warmth of light on people at work in her research about interior lighting design. 63% of the people who participated in Örnekoğlu’s study stated that working in daylight increased efficiency, provided a comfortable environment, and that fluorescent lighting made eyes tired.
COLORS OVERCOME THE FEAR
Children’s fear of dentists comes to an end thanks to dental staff wearing bright color uniforms with cartoon designs. The study conducted by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) revealed that children were not scared at treatments by pediatric dental team wearing bright color uniforms. Özlem Cumbul and Nesrin Çalışkan, students at IUE Department of Psychology, searched about the reasons behind children’s fear of dentists. The study led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seda Dural, Acting Head of IUE Department of Psychology, studied the effects of white versus colorful uniforms on children patients and the levels of fear felt by them. Cardiac rhythms of children were measured, and it was reported that white uniforms as opposed to colorful ones increased the fear in children.
‘ONE COOKIE ONE HOPE’
Student chefs baked their traditional New Year’s cookies for sick children. The New Year’s cookies baked by students of Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) as part of their “Pastry” course, are being sold in order to help purchase a dialysis machine for children with kidney failure. Student chefs, who contributed to the purchase of dialysis machine for children who are hospitalized at Nephrology Ward at Ege University, helped sick children to become healthy in New Year.
NEW YEAR’S EFFECT OF DOPING ON TOURISM
As the New Year embodies new hopes, tourism professionals who are going through a tough time, got their spirits lifted up thanks to the full attendance to New Year’s Eve activities. The experts, who state that Turkish tourists make their holiday decisions shortly before their travels, point that tourism sector experiences increase and decrease in income due to seasonal effects. They suggest that the sector would ensure continuity of sectorial success by re-creating the country’s image, creating brand cities, and seeking alternative markets.
FULL-FLEDGED SUPPORT FOR ‘STARS’
Turkish Stars took time out at Izmir University of Economics. Promotional truck of the aerobatic demonstration team of the Turkish Air Force and the national aerobatics team of Turkey is visiting Izmir University of Economics Balçova Campus as part of the national tour to promote the team and sell licensed products.
7 THOUSAND RARE DISEASES AWAITING THERAPY
7 thousand rare diseases never been heard of are affecting our lives negatively. One in every 16 people in Turkey suffers from a rare disease, 80% of which are caused due to genetic inheritance. Patients often consult with a wide range of clinical practitioners over a period of years before receiving the appropriate information about their condition.
WISHING FOR BETTER HEALTH…
IUE fashion designers designed dolls, felt trees and stockings, and toys in order to make children being treated at oncology ward feel hopeful about the New Year. The event, co-organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design and Faculty of Medicine, allowed children to have fun and get toys with get well wishes written on them. IUE students volunteered for this event that took place at IUE workshops and wished full and speedy recovery to children being treated at oncology ward.
DEDICATED TO SAVE LIVES
IUE “paramedics” are saving lives. Students of IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Paramedic Program, got involved in a simulated emergency exercise on Balçova campus. The life-like exercise drew great attention. The young future paramedics dedicated themselves to save lives in the Paramedic Day event, observed by Council of Higher Education in honor of establishment of paramedic programs in Turkey.
