THE ARCHITECTURE OF BASMANE IN INTERNATIONAL ARENA
The transformation of Basmane has been a course topic. Graduate students of Architecture Program of Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Izmir University of Economics, studied the physical and historical texture of Basmane, a district home for the refugees.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROJECT STRENGTHENED BY EU CONNECTIONS
An “Entrepreneurship Seminar” was held at Izmir University of Economics as part of the “Entrepreneurship Project Strengthened by EU Connections” co-coordinated by Finance Managers Association of Turkey–Finance Club and the Association of Young Entrepreneurs in Valencia (AJEV) and supported by Izmir University of Economics.
“DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A RISK”
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, shared his experiences with the students. Demirtaş, who told the students that they took a risk for the future at the time they were establishing the University in 2001, said, “You will take risks and make a difference. Preserving what you have is not considered success. I established this University so you can become entrepreneurs.”
GÜZELBAHÇE TECHNOLOGY BASE IS ON ITS WAY’
Izmir University of Economics will be establishing a science valley in Güzelbahçe. All the cases, filed by various institutions and the Izmir Branch of Chamber of City Planners, Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects, against the establishment of a new campus in Güzelbahçe, have been dismissed. The objections to use the total of 2,367.922 feet square land in Güzelbahçe as a “university campus” have been repealed. The construction of Izmir University of Economics Güzelbahçe Campus, whose master plans are already prepared, will begin as soon as the 1/25000, 1/5000, 1/1000 plans are ready.
INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS FOR CITIES
Hakan Çakır, senior student at Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), qualified to take part in a book project after his article on, “Architectural Designs for Future Transportation Systems” was accepted at the contest on “transportation” category at the “Smart Metropoles-Integrated Solutions for Sustainable and Smart Buildings & Cities” Platform that was held in Istanbul.
SIMPLE MEASURES SAVE LIVES IN EARTHQUAKES
Simple safety measures taken beforehand save lives during earthquake. Experts, who recommend that area underneath the beds, box springs should be filled with books, say that, “Books or encyclopedias are resilient; they don’t get destroyed if a tank went over them. You would survive”.
STEM CELLS FOR A ‘BROKEN HEART’
Stem cells from babies’ umbilical cord were transplanted into damaged parts of the heart during a bypass surgery. The new treatment approach in medical science aims to shrink the tissue and let patients live a more comfortable life. Prof. Dr. Alp Can, Lecturer from Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University, the leading name in this study, made a guest appearance in the seminar held by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Medicine at the Conference Hall.
ENVIRONMENT IGNORED BY TRANSLATION!
It has been reported that environmental consciousness has been ignored in translation of children's literature. Experts, who reviewed children's literature books translated from English to Turkish, noticed that use of words related to environment, nature, plants were minimized, and that young readers were prevented from getting to know other cultures.
NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP BY COINCIDENCE
His swimming life brought him historical success. Alper Özer’s National Underwater Rugby Youth Team, student of Department of Software Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), became European Champion. Özer, one of the 13 national athletes, won a trophy in World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS) Open Europe and Underwater Rugby Open Championships for Youth and Juniors. He said, “I am extremely happy and proud to have won this on behalf of our country. I also believe it is a perfect opportunity to introduce the sport of rugby.”
