As thousands of students and their parents are getting ready for 2016 – 2017 academic year, the experts state that families will have major roles in making their children, who are entering the education life for the first time, adapt to school easily. Betül Özkul Cura, Lecturer at Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, pointed that children might experience separation anxiety and uncertainty, and getting familiarized with the school would lessen the anxiety.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of Culinary Arts and Management is keeping a record of legendary tastes of Aegean Region. Centuries old recipes of Aegean cuisine, passed on to new generations by family elders, are being brought together as scientific recipes.
EARLY DETECTION OF OVARIAN CANCER
Science is getting better at early detection of ovarian cancer. The method, developed by Ceren Türkcan Kayhan, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics, Vocational School of Health Services, Medical Laboratory Techniques Program, determines the level of antigens in blood and therefore detects the cancer at an early stage. With this method which is capable of detecting the chemical changes via an electronic system in 10 minutes, other types of cancer are expected to be diagnosed at an earlier stage.
ONLINE SHOPPING IS APPEALING!
Turks are fond of the world of internet. According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data, computer and internet usage of individuals aged 16-74, which was 54.9%, last year went up to 61.2%. The internet was used more for shopping purposes. Prof. Dr. Hakan Yetkiner, Lecturer, Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics, who analyzed TUIK’s “Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage Survey on Households and Individuals”, stated that there were signs that consumer trading in Turkey, would switch to digital world in the long run.
CELEBRATING HOLIDAYS ON SOCIAL MEDIA!
Bairam celebrations are becoming virtual with the increase of internet use. Asst. Prof. Dr. Altuğ Akın, Lecturer, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Communication, Department of Media and Communication, reported that people had limited free time, and bairam was seen as a great opportunity for a getaway, and therefore bairam celebrations on social media increased greatly.
TURKISH – GREEK FRIENDSHIP CONSOLIDATED THROUGH MUSIC
Greek Turkish Youth Orchestra (GTYO) brought music lovers together in Izmir. The concert at Adnan Saygun Art Center, which consolidated the friendship of two countries, was co-organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Izmir Chamber of Commerce (ITO), and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Ekrem Demirtaş, Chairman of ITO and President of IUE Board of Trustees, Leni Konialidis, President of the GTYO, Muzaffer Tunçağ, Consultant to the Mayor of Izmir, and Vice Consul Dimitra Kaletsi, Consulate General of Greece in Izmir, attended the concert that built a bridge between the two shores.
NEW COLLABORATION IN HEALTH
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Private Medifema Hospital signed a protocol on education collaboration. Med students of Izmir University of Economics will get hands-on training and perform their internship at the hospital. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, Ali Yiğit, CHP Izmir Representative, Specialist Dr. Aslan Savaşan, Member of IUE Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, IUE Rector, Prof. Dr. Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, Meryem Yiğit, Shareholder of the Hospital, and Specialist Dr. Fatih İnmez, Chief Physician attended the protocol ceremony at Private Medifema Hospital in Torbalı.
