Tuğçe Çelimli, student at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, designed a crib for wheelchair-bound mothers so they can easily take care of their babies. Çelimli’s design came in first place in the category of Home Furniture for the Disabled at the “12^th National Home Furniture Design Competition” organized by the Association of Turkish Furniture Manufacturers (MOSDER).

The energy used for heating with the arrival of cold weather is drawing attention. Turkey has consumed 23 billion 952 million kilowatt-hours electricity in last December. It increased up to 6.4% compared to the former year. The experts are suggesting ways to use solar energy in order to maintain the indoor heat.  

Family members’ increasing activities with Alzheimer’s patients is believed to slow down the progress of the disease. Experts remind that the patients have hard time recognizing the family members in time, and they suggest stroking the patients’ hair as if they were children, and giving massages and therapeutic touches, and getting involved in different activities.   

The Silk Road is coming to life again with the cultural transmission. Izmir Economics students, who chose Chinese as a second foreign language, became acquainted with Chinese culture. Liu Zeng Xian, the Consul General, and Ni Xiao Jin, the Vice Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Izmir, the Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, Director of IUE School of Foreign Languages, Prof. Dr. Filiz Başkan, Rector’s Consultant and Head of Department of Political Science and International Relations, and students taking Chinese class attended the cultural event at Ege Restaurant which was organized by IUE Chinese Culture Club.

Insulin pumps, injection materials, prospectuses, medical products all turned into artwork. Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilek Himam Er, Lecturer at IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, who transformed medical products regularly used by diabetes patients into artwork as part of the World Diabetes Day, is calling attention to diabetes with art.

Art has the perfect solution to the problem of ‘what would happen’ to the clothes, items in the closet that are no longer being used as the seasons change. Jörn Fröchlich, Lecturer, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), created new designs with waste materials including curtains, towels, table clothes, jackets, artificial flowers, jewelry, etc. and pointed out to the importance of recycling. Fröchlich designed more than 20 items of wild western wear in his creation titled, “Spring Cleaning”. His designs will be on display at Agora Shopping Mall on December 23.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Business awarded students with high grade point averages. The successful students from a previous semester were awarded their certificates of achievement at the “Dean’s List” event, which is being held by Faculty of Business since 2014 – 2015 Academic Year Spring Semester. Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, IUE Rector, students and their parents attend the certificate ceremony.  

Donald Trump’s victory against Hillary Clinton in the latest US elections makes people question the validity of political campaigns. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Misci Kip, Vice Dean of IUE Faculty of Communication, who commented on Clinton and Trump election campaigns, stated that the US election results turned all known facts, about organizing a political campaign up until now, upside down.

It has been stated that Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in the USA elections caused shock more than surprise because it did not comply with the surveys and analysis held before the election.    

Izmir University of Economics will be steering energy policy of European Union. Department of Sustainable Energy of Izmir University of Economics will be participating in the establishment process of Europe’s Energy Union along with Norway, Austria, Spain, Germany, Finland, and Bulgaria as part of Horizon 2020 program in which R&D and innovation projects are funded by the European Union.
