SLOW FASHION DESIGNS
Forgotten clothes gathering dust in wardrobes are being transformed with design. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şölen Kipöz, Lecturer at Fashion and Textile Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), is creating new designs with old clothes, and shaping the fashion. In her “Sustainable Fashion” titled book, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kipöz explains about slow fashion movement, and points that even though products can be cheap and insensitive, with boutique manufacturing; they can become more environment-friendly and durable.
HERNIATED DISC PROBLEM IN WOMEN
Work conditions, inactivity due to weather and lack of exercise cause joint and muscle disorders which have influence on the formation of lumbar herniated disc. It is about twice as common in women than in men. Rıdvan Aktan, Lecturer at Physiotherapy Program at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, reported that the discs between lumbar vertebrae have standard alignment and to maintain this alignment, lifting objects without bending at the knee or twisting when lifting a heavy item should be avoided.
AEGEAN TASTES IN TUNISIA
Delicious tastes of Aegean will meet with the international chefs in Tunisia. Chefs of Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), will present local tastes of Aegean Region to international guests at the ‘Tunisia Mediterranean Cuisine Rendezvous’ event that will take place on October 14 – 16 in Tunisia. Tolga Kamiloğlu, Trainer Chef at IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Ahmet Güzelyağdöken, President of the Selection Committee of Lokanta Izmir, and Sırma Güven, Izmir Representative of Reseau Delice, visited Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, before their Tunisia trip.
DESIGN FOR HEALTHY PREGNANCY
Expectant mothers will have a comfortable pregnancy thanks to a headband and a wristband that measures blood pressure and heart rhythms. Selen Usta, senior at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that she intended to monitor stages of pregnancy better with her design called, “Shiny”. Usta reported that her design as headband and a wristband, which has sensors that measure the blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart rhythms of pregnant women, will allow risky pregnancies to be under close watch.
MARKS OF SUMERBANK TURNED INTO A BOOK
Patterns of Sümerbank fabrics, which left their mark in every household in Turkey, were brought together in a book titled, “Türkiye Baskı Desenleri Tarihi: Sümerbank Örneği 1956 – 2001(History of Turkish Prints and Patterns: Sümerbank Sample 1956 – 2001)”. Academicians of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) guided us around the memories of our recent past in the 441-page book they have written. The fabrics and patterns of Sümerbank’s Halkapınar Facilities, which shaped the daily wear and clothing culture of Republic of Turkey for 70 years, were taken under protection at Izmir University of Economics, and now at the service of researchers and interested parties.
NEW ACADEMIC YEAR BEGAN WITH ‘ADDRESS TO THE YOUTH’
Hundreds of students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) started the 16th Academic Year by reciting Atatürk's Address to the Youth. The students pledged allegiance to Ataturk. The first ceremony of the new academic year started with laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at IUE Ceremony Field. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, IUE Rector, academicians, administrative staff, graduates and students observed a moment of silence. Following the National Anthem, President Demirtaş and the Rector laid a wreath at Ataturk Monument.
LOVE YOUR HEART!
Family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high levels of blood lipids, and being overweight is to blame for making our heart sick at around 80%, our vital organ which works nonstop to pump blood containing oxygen. World Heart Day on 29 September is the World Heart Federation's biggest platform for raising awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD). The experts call attention to preventative measures and say “Take care of your heart”.
SANITATION PROBLEMS IN SCHOOLS
Alihan Bulgurcu, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics, Vocational School of Health Services, indicated that schools were shared spaces for hundreds of people, and observing basic rules of hygiene prevented spread of diseases and illnesses. Bulgurcu reported that dusting and airing the communal areas, classrooms regularly, washing the curtains, mopping the floors by the cleaning crew was very important, but the most important factor in terms of students was washing the hands.
IUE LOGISTICIANS ON THEIR WAY TO USA
Izmir University of Economics, Department of Logistics Management became a finalist at the annual Case Competition organized by INFORMS (The Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences) which is designed to encourage the creation, dissemination, and classroom use of new cases in operations research and the management sciences.
SUCCESS STORY FROM IZMIR TO HOLLYWOOD
Levent Haseki, graduate of Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Communication, Department of Media and Communication, who specializes in visual effects, the magical part of cinema, participated in the making of Hollywood hits such as Thor, I Frankenstein, Iron Man, Captain America, Underworld, Winter Soldier, etc. Haseki also started to work for a new Hollywood project.
