ERA OF EMPATHY IN TRANSPORTATION
2 thousand 730 personnel working at various units of ESHOT General Directorate, which serves the city of Izmir by transporting thousands of passengers every day, are learning to manage with stress and develop empathy. Drivers, working under a massive amount of stress, get a chance to improve their communication skills thanks to the training courses held by Izmir University of Economics Continuous Education Center. When the trainings are completed at the end of 2017, an era of empathy will begin in Izmir transportation.
SCARY NUMBERS ON AIDS!
Increase in HIV/AIDS cases puts Turkey under high-risk countries. It has been stated that while 292 people were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 2005, the number went up to one thousand 525 in the first 11 months of 2015. Surgical Specialist Yavuz Selim Süral, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Sciences, Izmir University of Economics, reported that the data showed an increase of 522%, and he said, “While Turkey was being considered among the countries that did not have an increased prevalence of HIV/AIDS, the rapid increase in the numbers lately is alarming.”
REDUCING ENERGY DEPENDENCE THROUGH SAVINGS
It has been stated that Turkey’s foreign dependence on energy such as oil and natural gas reached to 90%, and this dependency caused 35% of export income to go abroad. The experts reported that oil and natural gas consumption in industry reached 40%, in construction 30%, and in transportation 20%, and pointed out the importance of putting a realistic “Energy Efficiency Action Plan” into action due to energy resources getting more and more expensive, thus impacting the economy negatively.
NEW DESIGNS FOR THE WORLD OF ART
Students of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) created designs for the singers, actors/actresses they admire such as Rihanna, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Freddie Mercury, Weeknd, Ümmü Gülsüm, Audrey Hepburn, etc. Their creations will be on display at Agora Shopping Mall on December 23. Students prepared 10 different designs based on the celebrities’ personalities, lives as part of the Fashion and Design Studio: Collection course.
REDISCOVERING DESIGN
Lecturers Asst. Prof. Dr. Burkay Pasin (Department of Architecture) and Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilek Himam Er (Department of Fashion and Textile Design), both from Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, and Gökçeçiçek Savaşır, Lecturer from (Department of Architecture) Dokuz Eylül University introduced Izmir to the guests at “Kemeraltı’ndan Kültürpark’a Tasarım Rotası (Design Route from Kemeraltı to Kültürpark)” trip as part of Good Design Izmir event.
NEW YEAR ENTHUSIASM WITH HANDICRAFTS
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Continuous Education Center (CEC) is organizing felt ornaments workshop and Ebru marbling art workshop for those who are interested in entering the New Year with hope and decorating their house with handmade ornaments. The workshop, which will take place at Print Workshop at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, will teach how to make New Year’s ornaments with felt. In Ebru marbling art workshop, participants will be learning basic Ebru art and blend traditional and contemporary methods together.
DESIGN MEETS DISABILITY
Tuğçe Çelimli, student at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, designed a crib for wheelchair-bound mothers so they can easily take care of their babies. Çelimli’s design came in first place in the category of Home Furniture for the Disabled at the “12th National Home Furniture Design Competition” organized by the Association of Turkish Furniture Manufacturers (MOSDER).
SIMPLE MEASURES FOR THERMAL INSULATION
The energy used for heating with the arrival of cold weather is drawing attention. Turkey has consumed 23 billion 952 million kilowatt-hours electricity in last December. It increased up to 6.4% compared to the former year. The experts are suggesting ways to use solar energy in order to maintain the indoor heat.
SLOWING ALZHEIMER’S PROGRESS
Family members’ increasing activities with Alzheimer’s patients is believed to slow down the progress of the disease. Experts remind that the patients have hard time recognizing the family members in time, and they suggest stroking the patients’ hair as if they were children, and giving massages and therapeutic touches, and getting involved in different activities.
SILK ROAD FROM IZMIR TO CHINA
The Silk Road is coming to life again with the cultural transmission. Izmir Economics students, who chose Chinese as a second foreign language, became acquainted with Chinese culture. Liu Zeng Xian, the Consul General, and Ni Xiao Jin, the Vice Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Izmir, the Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, Director of IUE School of Foreign Languages, Prof. Dr. Filiz Başkan, Rector’s Consultant and Head of Department of Political Science and International Relations, and students taking Chinese class attended the cultural event at Ege Restaurant which was organized by IUE Chinese Culture Club.
