Prof. Dr. Barış Özerdem, Head of Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been assigned as the vice president of Region At Large (RAL) (including countries from Asia, Middle East, Europe, and Africa) of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). ASHRAE is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment which has 58 thousand members across 128 countries.   

Children, the future of Turkey, became acquainted with science at Izmir University of Economics, learned and played street games such as hopscotch, dodge ball, jump rope, sack race, etc. 300 kindergartners of Izmir Private Turkish College (ITK) met with students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), and celebrated April 23^rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day by singing songs on campus. The kindergartners had fun with educational toys, books, costumes, masks, and instruments designed by students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Services as part of their materials design course at the “2^nd IUE Children’s Festival”.

Izmir University of Economics’ 3 year endeavors to open Faculty of Medicine (English instruction) came to a happy ending with the approval of the respective boards of Council of Higher Education. The first medical students of Izmir Economics will start classes in 2017 – 2018 academic year. The instruction at Faculty of Medicine, where 50 students will be admitted initially, will be English. The young health professionals will also contribute to Izmir’s well-deserved share in health tourism.

Insulin pumps, injection materials, prospectuses, medical products all turned into artwork combined with Sümerbank fabrics. Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilek Himam Er, Lecturer at IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, who prepared the exhibition titled, “3 Dosage in a Day”, inspired by medical products regularly used by diabetes patients to control their blood sugar, reconciled the disease with art. The exhibition will stay open until May 2 at Izmir Sanat.

Izmir Economics students carry designers worldwide via e-commerce. The site, “baskasindarama.com”, developed by siblings Esra Sarıhan, Graduate of IUE Department of Industrial Engineering, and Melis Sarıhan, Graduate of IUE Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering, include products of Turkish designers in addition to their own designs.

Aegean herbs such as blessed thistle, baby's tears,  cibez (type of a cruciferous vegetable), stinging nettle, lamb's-ear, etc. are essential part of cuisines and spring diets. Aegean herbs and artichoke, which play a major part in Mediterranean-style eating, are good for strengthening digestive system, beautifying the skin, cleansing the liver, and playing a major role in the regression of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.  

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Women’s Tennis Team swept all their opponents in the 2^nd league games and got promoted to the 1^st league. IUE Women’s Tennis Team ranked in first place among 44 university teams at the Turkish University Sports Federation 2^nd League Tennis Games that took place in Antalya.

Students with special education needs proved that emotions are not hindered by disabilities. Students with autism and Down syndrome, receiving education at Ege Artı Special Education and Rehabilitation Center, who were invited by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program, reflected their emotions such as happiness, sorrow, love, frustration, etc. to photographs. IUE Photography Studio hosted students whom modeled different emotions. Photographs of students will be displayed at an exhibition.   

Internationally recognized Michelin starred chefs will turn herbal medicine, artichoke, into a world cuisine flavor. The "3^rd Urla International Artichoke Festival", co-organized by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Urla Municipality, Izmir University of Economics, and Reseau Delice Network of Gourmet Cities, will take place on April 28-30. Artichoke, an essential ingredient of the Aegean cuisine, will be re-interpreted by 25 famous chefs from 10 different cities at this year’s festival.    

Cattle will soon get NFC (near field communication) enabled passports. This way, information such as health status of animals, region they came from will be kept via NFC enabled labels. Lecturers of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) received patents for NFC Ear Tags and NFC Enabled Animal Passport. These two inventions will end the information chaos experienced in animal breeding, and accelerate control process.
