IUE communicators are opening the doors to new worlds for refugee kids. Students of Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), say, “stop” to negative discourse about Syrian children, who have been forced to flee their homes, with the “See Them as a Kid” titled project they developed. As the students get a chance to reminisce about their childhood, they draw and color with refugee kids, play outdoor games, and discover the colors of life together.  

Children, the future of Turkey, became acquainted with outdoor games at Izmir University of Economics. They learned and played outdoor games such as hopscotch, dodge ball, jump rope, sack race, etc. on Balçova Campus of IUE. They had fun with educational toys, designed by students of Child Development Program of Vocational School of Health Services, and were engaged with scientific activities.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Future Circular Collider (FCC) study group of CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Izmir University of Economics is now one of the 129 institutions from 34 countries to contribute to the studies of CERN FCC study group.  

Aspiring young designers created designs with marble. Orçun Umut Kumova, a senior at Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), designed a radiator core by combining marble and copper. Kumova’s “Calient” titled design received the "Marble Most Different Design Award" at the Marble Different Design contest organized by the Young Creative Ideas Platform within the Marble Izmir 2018-24^th International Natural Stone and Technology Fair.

It has been reported that less than one fourth of children who are subject to sexual abuse go public regarding the molestation. Prof. Dr. Ayşen Baykara, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, pointed out the importance of parent-child communication, and she said, “It may take up to 10 years for children to come forward about the molestation. They share their secret with both or either of the parents they feel close to, or with a close friend. Parents have major duties. What we mean is the fact that mother trying to understand and guide the child appropriately when the child comes to the mother with a problem from an early age.”

With the arrival of spring, many of us want to get lean for summer, and go on diets, whereas obesity becomes a major issue for Turkish public. Asst. Prof. Dr. Can Karaca, Lecture, Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that obesity was a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School organized a series of conferences titled, “The Campus of Finance and Development”. The event started with opening speeches of IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, and Burçin Önder, Director of IUE Vocational School. The keynote speaker Halit Soydan, Lecturer at IUE Department of Economics, and Former Managing Director of Yapı Kredi and Garanti Banks, pointed that many successes were achieved in commercial banking under Turkey’s conditions; however, the capital market did not improve.

Faculty members and students of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) are making the dreams of students from Batman come true. Students of Çayönü Çıkarlar Elementary School from Kozluk, Batman, will take part in the dance performance as part of observance of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day, by wearing the designs of IUE fashion designers.  

The allergy season is knocking on our door with the arrival of the spring. The experts state that environmental allergens such as pollens, pet dander, foods, heat, moisture, wind, and pressure, and global climate change have an influence on allergy, which causes symptoms such as itchiness, sneeze, runny or stuffy nose, cough, or itchy throat. The experts point out to the increase in the prevalence of allergies lately, which, based on World Health Organization statistics, affects more than 20% of the world’s population.

There is a remarkable relationship between lifestyle and cancer. Prof. Dr. Kamer Mutafoğlu, Head of Division of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), pointed that majority of cancer types were preventable by avoiding risk factors and opting for healthy life choices. “Nearly one-third of deaths caused by cancer are associated with five main lifestyle factors such as tobacco products, alcohol consumption, malnutrition, obesity, and lack of physical activity. Use of tobacco and tobacco products alone is the most significant cancer risk factor. It is accounted for 22% of leading cause of death globally. Using tobacco products is associated with development of lung, throat, mouth, esophagus, kidney, urinary track, pancreas, stomach, and cervical cancers”.
