TURKISH SCIENTIST RECEIVES A MAJOR AWARD FROM USA
Didem Pehlivanoğlu, Graduate of Department of Psychology, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has been awarded APA (American Psychological Association) Science Directorate's Dissertation Research Award 2017 for her thesis on perception, attention and memory processes in old age. Pehlivanoğlu, whose dissertation costs are covered by the award, is about to complete her study, will continue to research about the changes occurring in cognitive processes in old age.
FELT’S JOURNEY TO ENGLAND
The British will learn about the samples of Turkish traditional arts at the needle-felting workshop. Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Lecturer Jovita Sakalauskaite, invited by Yunus Emre Institute, will teach the participants in London how to make the motifs used in Ottoman artworks by using felt.
SLEEP EFFICIENCY UNDER CONTROL
Insomnia may lead to many medical conditions such as headaches, acid reflux, diabetes, coronary diseases, depression, etc. The “Smart Sleep Monitor”, developed by ARTSYS, company within Izmir Sciencepark of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), helps keeping temperature, sound, and light under control, factors that influence sleep pattern. The sensors that are attached to the bed during sleep are transmitted to smart phones via Wi-Fi. This way, external factors that influence sleep are identified, and minimized.
GRADUATE DEGREE AT OXFORD
Büşra Elif Yelbuz, senior at Department of Psychology, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), qualified to study for her graduate degree at Oxford University among 13 people worldwide. Yelbuz will be conducting academic studies on “compassion” at Oxford University, which ranked among top universities in 2018 World University Rankings.
MENTORING ENTREPRENEURIAL HIGH SCHOOLERS
Lecturers of Vocational School of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) will be mentoring entrepreneurial high school students. IUE academicians, in collaboration with Genç Başarı Eğitim Vakfı (Junior Achievement Turkey), will be mentoring the entrepreneurial projects of high school students, and those projects will later on compete at “Company of the Year Competition”.
BOTH A DESIGNER AND A COMPETITOR
İlayda Karakuş, Senior at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is both ice skating and designing costumes for her team at the same time. Karakuş, who is an ice skater at Synchronized Ice Skating Team of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, designs costumes for her team.
VOLUNTEERING AT DOWN CAFE
Duygu Deniz Turhanlar, student at Department of Mathematics, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), took on caring responsibilities for youth with Down syndrome at ‘İyilik Atölyesi’ (Down Cafe). Turhanlar shares the journey of youth with Down syndrome at Down Cafe, which is supported by a private company and run by Izmir Down Syndrome Association member parents and children. Turhanlar reported that she visited the Down Cafe, which was opened last July, with her family by chance. “We decided to go in there when we were passing by. When I ordered, I felt the need to be with them, accompany them along their journey, and get involved in a social project,” said Turhanlar.
A NEW SOFTWARE ON COURSE SCHEDULES BY IUE SOFTWARE DESIGNERS
Ege Deliguru and Onat Çipli, both juniors from Department of Software Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), developed a software program which generates alternatives for weekly course schedules in course selection process. Students will be able to see the best weekly course schedule combinations by entering the course codes in www.whichisgreat.com titled website.
THE FIRST FASHION SHOW AT THE NEW BUILDING BY IUE FASHION DESIGNER
Yeliz Cengiz, Graduate of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), presented her “Saza” titled collection to an appreciative audience at the new building of Izmir Chamber of Commerce. Fashion Designer Cengiz displayed 25 wedding gowns she prepared in 6 months by using macramé, a form of textile produced using knotting techniques.
