Coronavirus anxiety and quarantining could increase eating disorder risk, the experts warn. Asst. Prof. Betül Öztürk, Director of School of Applied Management Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), said, “People may turn to food for comfort when facing a difficult problem, feeling stressed or even feeling bored, which is defined as ‘emotional eating’. Emotional eating can result in excessive weight gain as well as other illnesses.”

Prof. Oğuz Esen, Lecturer at Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), reported that education was one of the leading sectors that got affected by the coronavirus pandemic globally.  In his study regarding higher education worldwide, Prof. Esen reminded that 1,5 billion students and 63 million educators in all levels of education got affected. 

Coronavirus pandemic is not only a threat to human health but to global economy as well. Prof. Ayla Oğuş Binatlı, Lecturer at Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), pointed that economic growth, in countries affected by the pandemic, would decrease. Prof. Binatlı said, “Economy will shrink more as the battle against the pandemic continues. Unemployment rates will increase despite the precautions. As the unemployment increases, shrinking industries will not grow again, and profitability will decrease.”

Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which owns Learning Management System, a system supported with the latest technology and being used by a limited number of universities nationwide, provided distance education to its approximately 10 thousand students. 

Psychologists often recommend to “focus on present” in order to cope with high levels of anxiety when we are all confined to homes during these days due to the coronavirus outbreak. 

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) started to produce “face shields” to protect healthcare professionals who have been working tirelessly day and night against coronavirus (Covid-19). 

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) started a campaign together called ‘The streets may be empty, but they still need full bowls’ in order to serve food and water for stray animals starving due to the closure of cafes and restaurants because of the prevention of coronavirus spread. 

Ezgi Oral, Lecturer at Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), made recommendations to parents to help their children, who are having distance education at home due to coronavirus. 

Assoc. Prof. Dilek Soysal, Lecturer at Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has warned the citizens against the use of plastic gloves all day long in order to protect from the global Covid-19 pandemic. 

Melahat Kızıl, Lecturer at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), provided important tips for the elderly on how to spend quality and pleasant time at home.
