“Orada bir köy var uzakta!” (There is a Village Far Away) is a well-known children’s song. Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) couldn’t keep still about that call for help from those far away villages. The letter of Mustafa Murat Sönmez, the P.E teacher of the school at Bereketli Village located at İdil, Şırnak, set the IUE students in motion to help the young students there.

With Kader’s tragic death, a 14 year-old child bride who was married off at the age of 12 in Siirt making the headlines again, it has been reported that the issue of child brides, which Turkey fails to find a solution for, was also a violation of children’s rights. The latest news on 14 year-old Kader being found dead from gunshot wounds, who was married off at the age of 12 in Pervari, Siirt and lost her second child due to premature birth, once again brought the attention back to the child brides.
STUDENTS OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS ARE SHOWERED WITH AWARDS
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design returned from competitions with awards. While Kaan Selçuk, junior student of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Industrial Design came in first place, Tayfun Çelik, senior students of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design received an encouragement award at KOÇTAŞ Açık Fikir Interior Design Competition.
THE MOSAICS OF HISTORICAL AGORA BECAME CARPET DESIGNS!
The mosaics of historical city of Agora, located at the heart of Izmir, will live in the motifs of hand-woven carpets. The mosaics of Agora, which was left to its own devices, were excavated by the support of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, and carpets were hand-woven in mosaic patterns. The mosaic designed carpets, which were woven upon the recommendation of Ekrem Demirtaş, President of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, will be used as gifts in promoting Izmir. The carpets bearing the colours and weaving techniques of Western Anatolia will be decorating the offices of statesmen all around the world. The first group of carpets are finished and took their place at the Office of President Demirtaş at IUE.
BASMANE WILL GET A “HAN”!
Nebahat Mine Tunca, graduate of Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture (2013) won the Serra Special Award at Archiprix Competition for her “han” project which reflects the light and shadow effects of Basmane region. This award qualified Tunca to attend an architectural trip in Holland. Tunca, who got inspired by the light effects between the historical and unique alleys of Basmane to create her “han” project, established an access route between Basmane Train Station and Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar by this way.
IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS WILL TRAIN NEW GENERATION OF BANKERS
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Graduate School of Social Sciences will be training qualified individuals needed by the banking sector that is in the growth process. Banking and Applied Finance Master Program to be offered at IUE will provide training on various simulation applications and financial modelling methods for bankers.
DESIGN SUCCESS OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, returned with 2 awards from the architectural project competitions held by Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Ministry of National Education. Ergül won honourable mention awards with his designs for Adıyaman Active Living Centre Architectural Project and Istanbul Beykoz Education Campus Architectural Project at competitions respectively held by Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Ministry of National Education.
