As the smart phones entered our lives, they brought along a thriving accessory market. Ece Gümüş, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics, who double majored in Department of Business Administration and Department of International Trade and Finance, turned her phone case designs, which she started as a hobby, into a business. While celebrities as Buse Terim, Sezin Erbil, and Bengü favour the brand “CINCO” by Ece Gümüş, some 17 thousand followers on the internet, choose her designs as accessories for their phones. 

İdil Yiğitbaşı, CEO of Yaşar Holding, stated that Yaşar brand had been making innovative investments since its establishment, and she said, “For a company to become a brand, innovation, distinction, and courage is required. Yaşar Holding, since its establishment, moved towards that goal and made sure the brands it created were accepted.”   

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has flown the “Entrepreneurship Flag”, which it qualified to have in the “Bu Gençlikte İş Var” titled competition organized by Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) for the most number of enterprising projects, up the pole. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, IUE Rector, Metin Akman, TUSIAD Member and “Bu İşte Gençlik Var” Project Coordinator, Geza Dologh, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Chamber of Shipping Izmir Branch, and Akın Kazançoğlu, Metin Akdurak, Mizyal Akımsar, members of IUE Board of Trustees, presented the awards to 70 students of IUE who qualified to have the “Entrepreneurship Flag” with their 104 projects. 

Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Culinary Arts and Management learned about the herbs, which are an important part of the Aegean cuisine culture, onsite. The students, who observed the Aegean herbs at Seferihisar Farmers’ Market, also learned how to pick up the herbs growing in the region.  The future chefs, who visited Seferihisar as part of ‘Achieving a Star for Aegean Cuisine Project’, were welcomed by Neptün Soyer, spouse of Tunç Soyer, the Mayor of Seferihisar. The students got a chance to meet and talk to the farmers in the region, and learned about all stages of Aegean herbs; how they made it to our tables starting from the farms, to the markets. The students will also be preparing an informative booklet about the Aegean herbs as part of the project.

Izmir University of Economics, Department of Fashion and Textile Design decorated the windows of Turkey’s all leading stores at Agora Shopping Mall before the New Year. Students, who created New Year concept designs for companies such as Ali Erez, Pelle, and Bisse, decorated the store windows in the wee hours of the morning.  While the students highlighted the store windows with their exquisite decorations, they offered variety of shopping options to shoppers with their designs.

Prof. Dr. İsmail Bulmuş, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics, Department of International Trade and Finance, stated that the increase in exchange rates in the coming months would be noticed more clearly on the producer and consumer price indices.   
Prof. Dr. Bulmuş reviewed the Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) announced by Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) and stated, “We have yet to see the exchange rate volatility in Producer Price Index. Exchange rates experienced a change since June. 1 US$ increased from 1.80TL to 2.05 TL. The rates are reflected to prices gradually. The minimum period is 3 months, however, there is a reflection period ranging from 6 to 9 months. Therefore, this modest increase of PPI should not be deceptive. In the coming months, we will be observing a more serious volatility in PPI at a larger scale.”

As the regulations, regarding limiting instalment payments via credit cards, are expected to go into effect before the new year, it is reported that some 325 thousand 179 people failed to pay their credit card debts in the first six months of this year. The experts state that the current account deficits cause for restraints in individual credits. While Turkey’s current account deficit totalled up to 3 billion 281 million USD in September, it reached 59 billion 135 million on a yearly scale.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is expanding the horizons of its students with second foreign language education. Tunç Tatlıcı, who chose Italian as a second foreign language during his associate studies at IUE, completed his undergraduate education in Italy where he was awarded a scholarship. Tatlıcı shared his success with IUE academicians.

The experts approach the agreement, signed between Iran and America, England, France, Russia, Chia, and Germany, the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, to curb the Iranian nuclear programme, cautiously, and see the good mood between the parties as a “test of trust”. 

According to the sectoral confidence indices by Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), confidence for services, retail trade and construction sectors decreased. The confidence index which was 103.5 for services, 103 for retail trade and 78.3 for construction sectors in previous month became 99.6, 98.2 and 77.1 respectively. Prof. Dr. Ayla Oğuş Binatlı, Head of Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics, evaluated TUIK data and indicated that the decrease in retail trade and services sectors confidence indices were striking.
