IUE Graduate Hande Arı among the top 10 in Turkey
Graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) make Turkey proud with their success in their career journeys. Hande Arı, who double majored in IUE Department of Business Administration and Department of Logistics Management, was selected as one of the 10 outstanding young people of Turkey by the International Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs Association (Junior Chamber International - JCI) Istanbul.
IUE professors are on the "World List"
Two professors from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) entered the list of “Most Influential Scientists of the World” created by a research team led by Dr. John Ioannidis from Stanford University, USA. Having developed many projects in the international arena, whose articles are published in the world’s most prestigious journals and qualified to obtain patents with their innovative works, IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Faculty Members Prof. Levent Eren and Prof. Türker İnce made Turkey proud by ranking in the list.
Online 'weight loss' period
The increase in time spent at home to protect against coronavirus and the habit of sedentary life caused a "weight" crisis for thousands of people. Those who cannot control themselves at home and eat constantly, find the remedy to turn to dietitians who provide online services, while also examining the exercise recommendations shared on the internet. Stating that the energy need of the body is less than normal during this period when it is necessary to stay at home, Prof. Nazan Turhan, Head of Department of Food Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), said, “Recently, there has been a significant increase in the number of people with weight problems. One of the most important reasons for this is getting 2-3 times more energy than the body needs. There are those who open the refrigerator every half an hour and wonder what they can eat. Eating cannot be the way out of boredom. We have to give up this habit.”
'Digital' mobilization
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) started a 'digital transformation' movement in order for students to improve themselves in this field by not being indifferent to e-commerce, which grew 52% with the pandemic and digitalization that developed at a record level. IUE, which aims for its students to take their place in the growth of digitalization and allow them to come together with the leading names of the industry, updated course contents and increased its cooperation with Turkey's leading companies. IUE Rector Prof. Murat Aşkar said, “We have to bring entrepreneurial youth, who are capable of producing digital solutions, who have good command of new technologies, to our country. Izmir, with its high potential, can become one of the leading cities at the center of digitalization, raising qualified young people in this field.”
Owner of 100 medals
Bengü Aktarmaç, student of Department of Psychology, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), started swimming as a hobby when she was only 7 years old, and in short time she became a member of the Fenerbahçe Sports Club and made her way into the National Team. Aktarmaç, who has achieved a hard-to-reach success in the competitions she has participated in since middle school and won nearly 100 medals so far and representing our country in 2019 and ranked 4th in the "breaststroke" technique, determined the Olympics as her goal. Having benefited from the full athlete scholarship provided by IUE, Aktarmaç, who started university this year, said, “I put a lot of effort into swimming, I want to progress in this area. But education is also very important. I always wanted to study psychology and I reached my goal. Sports and education do not clash but complement each other. I want to be an example by achieving success in both areas.”
The Aegean is distributing healing
The fear of catching coronavirus, which is transmitted to more than 73 million people worldwide, and the increase in flu cases with the arrival of winter days, prompted citizens to seek natural miracles to strengthen the immune system. While the way to prevent diseases is through a healthy diet, medicinal herbs unique to the Aegean Region, which have been indispensable on the tables for years, have also been the first choice of many people. Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Head of Food Engineering Department Prof. Dr. Nazan Turhan explained the benefits of medicinal herbs such as hibiscus, nettle, tangle, cibez, horseradish, olive leaves, ivy, which are good for many diseases from shortness of breath to blood pressure, blood circulation to stomach discomfort, and gave advice to citizens.
Award for 'urban furniture' design made of marble
Sezin Gediz Ün, a fourth-year student at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of Industrial Design, was deemed worthy of an award for her design, which is called “urban furniture” and allows citizens to spend time comfortably in the common areas in the city center.
From football fields to university campus
Doğu Demirkol, who started football at the age of 9 in Göztepe club, proved his talent in a short time and wore the national team uniform for 16 times so far, carried his success in sports to academic life. Having once again proved that sports and education can be carried out together, Demirkol, who enrolled in the Department of Civil Engineering at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) this year, said, “Two years ago, I suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the match. Although my career was in danger, I could not drop out of football. However, I clearly understood that I should focus on my education along with football. I set myself a goal to be a civil engineer like my father and got into the department I wanted.”
