Beware of hidden danger in buildings
Reminding that the aftershocks may continue for a while after the 6.6 magnitude Izmir earthquake, Prof. Celalettin Kozanoğlu, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), warned against the danger on the exterior of the buildings.
Are the operating rooms safe enough?
A webinar titled, “Is Your Operating Room Safe Enough? Smoke Absorbers” was co-organized by Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association. The webinar, in which 559 people participated, was held on IUE Blackboard Collaborate and moderated by Prof. Meryem Yavuz van Giersbergen from Faculty of Nursing, Ege University. Participating in the webinar as a speaker, Assoc. Prof. Taylan Özgür Sezer, General Surgeon Specialist at Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital also shared valuable information.
Cavit is on his way to ‘Tokyo’
Cavit Biriz, student at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who started windsurfing as a hobby at the age of 9, improved himself and worked his way up to the Turkish National Team, leaving one step to the "Olympic" dream. Biriz, who got special permission from Turkish Sailing Federation to train 6 hours every day even during curfew with the goal of joining the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, and strictly abode by the list prepared by the Polish dietitian, will represent our country in the Olympics if he surpasses his opponents in the Quota Competition to be held in Portugal on November 24. Biriz said, “I would very much like to take part in the Olympics by overtaking my competitors again that I have left behind before and that I am ahead of in the world rankings.”
Don't buy every mask you see on the street
Nursun Üstünkarlı, Lecturer at Paramedic Program, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), warned citizens that masks, which are vital in the fight against coronavirus, can be sold by some street vendors at low prices without paying attention to hygiene and quality. Üstünkarlı said, “The protection of every mask sold is not the same. Pharmacies and medical drug stores may be preferred for purchasing masks. Fabric masks that are inspected and sold by secure channels can also be used.”
Don't let distance education turn into a phobia
The coronavirus, which negatively affects life in many issues from daily life to work life and social interaction, has also directed universities to distance education. While hundreds of thousands of university students started the new semester before they set foot on the campus, Nilay Uğurlu Öztürk and Merve Minkari Tunçay, clinical psychologists of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), made suggestions to young people and families to prevent the transformation of distance education into phobia.
Izmir University of Economics entered the EU
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) acceded to the EU consortium for nonproliferation and disarmament. The consortium includes as members 97 research organizations and universities from 27 European countries. Dr. Sıtkı Egeli, a member of faculty at IUE Department of Political Science and International Relations, said IEU will be participating in research and activities aimed at providing guidance to EU policies on nonproliferation and disarmament. Dr. Egeli has several books and articles on efforts to control weapons of mass destruction, and has pointed out to the importance of disarmament in events and meetings in more than 20 countries.
International cooperation against the epidemic should increase
Prof. Şevket Pamuk has been a guest speaker at the opening lecture of 2020-2021 academic year of Faculty of Business, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), one of the most preferred faculty by students nationwide with 100 percent occupancy rate this year. Delivering a speech titled "The Epidemic and Economy", Prof. Pamuk said that the world is faced with a stubborn virus that does not tolerate any mistakes, and that international cooperation against the epidemic should increase.
